Concert against climate change

A concert dedicated to the fight against climate change is to take place at Syntagma Square in central Athens on May 9th, organised by the representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament in Greece in collaboration with the foreign ministry and Athens municipality.

Nikos Aliagas will be the event's main presenter, while a host of Greek and foreign artists will participate, among them Marios Fragoulis, C Real, Adam Cohen, Demi Evans and others.

The concert is set to begin at 20:30 in the evening and will be free to the public. It will also feature a giant video wall, on which organisers will screen environmental messages from people that have distinguished themselves in the fight to protect the environment.

The aim of the concert is to encourage people to participate actively in solving the problems and to transmit messages that will raise environmental awareness among the public.

The European Commission in Greece wants to broadcast a message that people will have to change their habits through a new campaign on climate change, in order to encourage people to mobilise and take effective action to protect the environment.

Alkinoos Ioannidis UK Tour: Stop 4-Birmingham

Greek Cypriot troubadour Alkinoos Ioannidis returns to England this spring as a part of a bigger European tour. Ioannidis who sold out a show at Queen Elizabeth Hall last summer is going to present a rather different, more electric sounding band this time around.

For that he has recruited three of Greece’s most skilled musicians: Yiorgos Kaloudis (5-string electric cello & Cretan lyra), Michalis Kapilidis (drums) and Stavros Lantsias (keys). Alkinoos will be playing lute, acoustic and electric guitar.

The band will perform re-arrangements of songs from his back-catalogue as well as covers, plus new and unreleased compositions that will be heard for the first time. Alkinoos on this tour has chosen to perform in small, cosy venues as he has done in the beginning of his thirteen-year career where he can engage easier with his audience.

The Leukaemia Society (UK) will be hosting its 2nd all singing Talent Show featuring Cypriot and Greek talent. The shortlisted contestants will perform their hearts out in front of a live audience and the winner will be announced at the end of the evening. The lucky winner will win a day in a professional recording studio.

The Talent Show Night will be Hosted by MARTHA & EVE, (previously known as 'donna & kebab') and judged by other professionals.

The aims of this event is to encourage new talent from the community and to help create awareness of the shortage of Bone Marrow Donors from the Mediterranean Community.

Vessel Gallery is proud to present a stunning new interpretation of one of the most sacred art forms.

Inspired by the most holy representations of the Orthodox religion, architectural glass artist George Papadopoulos has created intriguing, challenging versions of the Madonna, Jesus and Saints.

Made from carefully controlled shattered glass, these unique canvases depict archetypal images in a wholly new and relevant way, from the electrifying neon pink Madonna to a serene Saint George. Icons not only were traditionally viewed as representing deity, they were considered to be holy in themselves, or ‘acheiropoieton’, untouched by human hand and created by saints. This strict visual tradition where conformity of colours and expressions is valued above all else and handed down from one generation of artists to the next, contrasts sharply with the Western view, where novelty and developing a new aesthetic are prized the most. For Papadopoulos the ultimate challenge is to reconcile these two diametrically opposed traditions, so a search for a new iconography is not something to be undertaken lightly.

In his own words, “It struck me, on a retreat to Mount Athos a few years ago, that glass was the ideal medium for conducting this search. Icons have always been seen as windows between the human and divine worlds: glass is both transparent and capable of bearing an image, a revelation and a mystery.

Abstraction, seeing reality in a non-realist way, is part of the iconic tradition. (Icon-makers have never gone in for perspective, or for naturalistic portraiture.) After a lot of thought, I have set to work on a series of icons of the Virgin which will, I hope, place Orthodox traditions in a modern context – see miracles in new technology, signs of God's genius in materials like fluorescent paint. The Virgin is both the Mother of God and a woman. She is eternal, but also mortal; unchanging, but capable of change.”

What better time to launch these works of art but on St George’s Day, and just before the Russian and Greek Orthodox Easter?
